DeKalb County Shelter Takes in 33 Dogs Amid Unprecedented Overcrowding

LifeLine Animal Project pleads for help as shelter population pushes past 600

CHAMBLEE, GA – (October 29, 2024) Last night Dekalb County Animal Enforcement Services rescued 33 dogs from a single location as part of an animal cruelty case and ongoing investigation. The dogs are currently being cared for at the DeKalb County Animal Shelter, which is managed by LifeLine Animal Project. They will all receive cruelty exams and medical attention as needed. They are now part of a court case and not currently available for adoption, but their arrival puts other animals at risk.

This large impound comes at a particularly challenging time, as the shelter has been working all year to decrease the dog population to 475 through positive outcomes like adoption, foster and through rescue partners. DeKalb County Animal Services is an open-intake facility. No animal is turned away, regardless of need or behavior. When the shelter runs out of space, even friendly and healthy animals are at risk for euthanasia. The staff is urging the community to come to the shelter and help save lives by adopting or fostering a dog to make space for others, like in this cruelty case.

All adoptions are free until the end of October. If you are unable to adopt, please consider fostering or donating to LifeLineAnimal.org. Learn more about how to become a foster parent at LifeLineAnimal.org/foster or visit dekalbanimalservices.com/adopt to view the list of animals available for adoption.

Please direct any questions regarding the investigation to DeKalb County Animal Enforcement at 404-294-2939.
