Bequests & Estate Planning

A charitable bequest is a gift made to a charity pursuant to your Will or Revocable Trust upon your death.  You may update your Will or Revocable Trust at any time to include a charitable bequest.  In the event circumstances change and you no longer desire to make the gift upon your death, you maintain the ability to change the provision in your Will or Revocable Trust at any time while you are living and have capacity to make financial decisions.

The charitable bequests we receive from our donors allow us to continue our mission of supporting Atlanta’s animals.  There are a few common ways that donors bequest gifts to LifeLine Animal Project: donating a percentage of your estate, donating a specific dollar amount, or donating the remainder of your estate after other commitments have been met.  Here is sample language you may consider adding to your estate planning documents to reflect this strategy:

Suggested bequest language:

“I give, devise or bequeath (insert $ amount, % of estate, or all of my residual estate) to LifeLine Animal Project, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with its headquarters located at 3180 Presidential Drive, Atlanta, GA  30340, to be used for its general purposes.”

Legal name: LifeLine Animal Project

Legal address: 3180 Presidential Drive, Atlanta, GA 30340

Federal tax ID number: 01-0599278

There are online resources available for you to create your own legal will, some of which are free.

If you have any questions about making a bequest to LifeLine Animal Project, please contact Chief Development Officer, Jennifer Eddy, at 571-643-8790 or jeddy@lifelineanimal.org.

Beneficiary Designations

Designating a charity as the beneficiary of part or all of a retirement account can be a tax efficient element of an estate plan.  Distributions from retirement accounts to your heirs will be treated as taxable ordinary income to the recipients.  If you are charitably inclined, naming a charity as the recipient of your retirement assets upon your death can free up more tax efficient assets for your individual heirs.  In addition, your estate will receive a tax deduction for the charitable contribution to offset estate taxes.

If you would like to name LifeLine Animal Project as a beneficiary of your retirement assets, simply fill out a designated beneficiary form through your employer or plan administrator.  Keep in mind that some states require spousal consent to changes in beneficiary designations, and you should always inform your financial and legal advisors of any changes made to these designations.

Qualified Charitable Distributions

Making a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) can be a great option to lower your income taxes while doing good for others.  When you take a distribution from your IRA, it usually counts as income for tax purposes. A QCD, also called IRA Charitable Rollovers, is an exception.

If you are 70 ½ years of age or older, you can reduce your adjusted gross income by making a QCD of up to $100,000 each year from your IRA to 501(c)(3) organizations, without the distribution being treated as taxable income to you.

Please mail distribution checks to:
LifeLine Animal Project
3180 Presidential Drive
Atlanta, GA 30340

Please contact us at donations@lifelineanimal.org to notify us of your intended IRA distribution so we can thank you for your generosity and ensure you receive a proper acknowledgement.

Go to the IRS website for additional useful information on QCDs.

Donor Advised Funds

A donor advised fund (DAF) is a giving account established at a public charity (the “sponsoring organization”) that allows donors to make charitable contributions to the giving account and then recommend grants to public charities from the account over time.  If you have a DAF account, you can recommend grants to LifeLine Animal Project.  Depending on where you hold your DAF, your options for making recommendations will vary.  Speak with your financial advisor or brokerage firm about the best way to do this.

Please keep in mind that we may not be made aware of your contribution via the DAF so please contact us at donations@lifelineanimal.org to notify us of your gift so we can thank you for your generosity and ensure you receive a proper acknowledgement.

Donating Stock

By gifting appreciated stocks or other marketable securities that you have held for more than one year directly to a public charity (instead of cash), you can maximize the impact of your gift.  If you sell the appreciated securities and donate the cash generated by the sale to charity, you will be subject to capital gains tax on the gain realized by the sale.  But if you donate the securities directly to the charity, you will pass the unrealized capital gains to the charity (which will not be subject to capital gains tax when it sells the securities) and still be eligible to receive a charitable income tax deduction equal to the full fair market value of the donated securities (subject to AGI limitations).

If you would like to support our work by donating appreciated stocks, bonds or mutual funds, and receive a charitable deduction for the full market value and no capital gains tax subject to IRS deductible limitations, follow these steps:

Step 1: Provide your broker or advisor with the following transfer information:
  • Deliver to DTCC Clearing #0226
  • Account number: G1F 167368
  • Account name: LifeLine Animal Project, Inc.
  • LifeLine’s EIN: 01-0599278

Receiving institution:

National Financial Services LLC
200 Liberty Street, Fifth Floor
New York, NY 10281

Step 2: Let us know!

When your stocks are transferred into our account, we do not receive any information that identifies you as the donor. We want to ensure that you receive a proper tax acknowledgement of your gift, so please email Jennifer Eddy at jeddy@lifelineanimal.org to provide the following information when the gift is made:

  • Brokerage company
  • Name and address of donor
  • Name of stock
  • Number of shares
  • Anticipated date of transfer

If you have any questions, please email Chief Development Officer, Jennifer Eddy, at jeddy@lifelineanimal.org.
