Our Approach: Promoting Humane, Force-Free Tools for Success in Shelter and Homes
At LifeLine, we use and recommend positive reinforcement-based equipment to support humane handling, build trust, and promote lifelong learning in our animals. The right equipment helps keep dogs safe, reduces stress, and sets both people and pets up for success.
Standard Collars
Used for ID tags and as a backup during walks (not for leash attachment alone)
- Flat buckle collars – Ruffwear, Viper Biothane
- Quick-release collars – Dogline Biothane, TagMe
- GPS-enabled collars – Fi Series 3, Tractive
Martingale Collars
Great for dogs who slip out of flat collars
Standard Harnesses
Best for most dogs when walking and for leash attachment
No-Pull Harnesses
Ideal for dogs learning leash manners
QUICK TIP:
We recommend pairing these with double-ended leashes when possible for gentle redirection and more control without force.
Leashes
Choose sturdy and simple designs that allow for ease of movement.
- 6 ft. Flat Nylon or Biothane – Fida, Ruffwear
- Double-ended leash – Ppoopal Clip/Slip Combo, SaraSays Biothane
- Slip Lead – Ruffwear Just a Cinch, Mendota Pet
- Harness Lead
Treats
Use for positive reinforcement, engagement, and training
- Pup-Peroni Training Treats
- Dried Anchovies
- Ziwi Peak Dog Food
- Fresh options like string cheese, chicken, or hot dogs (cut into pea-sized bits)
QUICK TIP:
Reinforcement should be high-value and frequent during training and handling sessions.
Muzzles
Use for safety while still allowing easy breathing and positive interaction
- Baskerville Ultra Muzzle
- Mayerzon Muzzle
- Custom muzzles for best fit
QUICK TIP:
Muzzle training should always be positive and gradual. Muzzles are not a punishment but a tool for success!
Additional Tools
Force-free items that promote learning without pain or intimidation
- Clickers – ClikStik, Frienda Clicker Pack
- Treat pouches – a garden apron, PetSafe Pouch
- Toys – Viper K9 Tug, Kong Stuffers
- Long lines for recall practice – Biothane or Nylon, 15-30 ft.
To protect the emotional and physical well-being of our dogs, LifeLine does not support the use of aversive equipment, including:
- Prong/pinch collars
- Choke chains or slip leads used as punishment
- Electronic/shock/remote collars
- Spray collars (citronella, air)
- Head halters (such as Gentle Leader or Halti – due to risk of injury and stress signals often seen in shelter dogs)
- Leash corrections or any equipment used to intimidate, startle, or cause discomfort
These tools rely on fear, discomfort, or pain and can increase behavioral issues over time. They are not aligned with our force-free philosophy.
The LifeLine Behavior Team is here to help! We offer coaching on equipment fitting, muzzle training, force-free handling, and more. Let’s work together to give our dogs the best chance at success in their future homes. Email our team, or check out additional Training Resources for pets.
