We all enjoy spending the warmer months exploring the outdoors with our favorite furry companions. But with temperatures rising very quickly, be sure not to put your pet in harm’s way. Check out some heat safety tips for keeping your pets safe in hot weather.
What are heartworms? Why is this important?
Dogs get heartworms from when an infected mosquito bites them. This is preventable with monthly heartworm prevention that comes in a tablet form or a topical treatment. You can also speak with your veterinarian to learn more about different preventions and see which one would work best for you and your dog.) The good news is that heartworms are not contagious to other dogs. We see an increase in heartworms during the summer time, when mosquitos are most active, so it’s very important to keep up with your dog’s monthly preventatives.
If your pet spends time outside this summer, make sure to do the following:
If your pet is overheated or experiencing a heat stroke, Do not hose your dog down with cold water. This could send your dog’s body into shock. Make sure to move your dog to a shaded area or bring them inside where there is a/c. You can also place them in front of a fan. If you would like to cool them down with water, do not use ice cold water, make sure the water is room temperature and focus on placing the water on their neck, head, and belly. Dogs can overheat quickly so make sure to monitor them. Some dog breeds also have more difficulties during the summer heat than others, so it’s important to do your research on your dog’s breed.
