Adopt a dog for free on National Dog DayThis year's National Dog Day was a big success at LifeLine's animal shelters!

National Dog Day is celebrated August 26th annually, and was founded in 2004, as the world's first holiday to celebrate all the great things dogs do for us and to promote adoption.

DeKalb County Commissioner Nancy Jester visited our DeKalb County Animal Shelter to help promote adoption of these wonderful dogs and to call for support for the new DeKalb County animal shelter.

According to LifeLine Animal Project CEO Rebecca Guinn, National Dog Day is a great time to adopt a dog, because shelters typically have the highest intake of dogs during the summer. “With 30 to 40 animals entering the shelter daily, we need public support to help us save lives,” says Rebecca.

Indeed in August alone, LifeLine's DeKalb and Fulton shelters took in just under 1,500 homeless animals! Due to this LifeLine decided to celebrate by waiving all adoption fees during the holiday.

“By waiving adoption fees on National Dog Day we hope to see a record number of people coming into the shelter and giving our wonderful animals a new life,” said Rebecca.

"I am grateful for the wonderful folks working in the shelter everyday," said Nancy. "Improving the lives of these animals, their caretakers, and their advocates is a mission that I share."

We are happy to report the promotion brought many potential adopters to our shelters, leading to over 40 adoptions! In fact, the adoption special was so successful that we have extended it for the entire month of September at all of our shelters!
