Myths about shelter dogs header

It's no secret that "rescued" is our favorite breed. From the senior dog whose owner can no longer care for him to an unwanted litter of kittens, we love and care for each and every animal that comes through our shelter doors. And although shelter pets often make the best family pets, there is a stigma attached to them, which results in 1.5 million shelter pets being euthanized each year nationwide. If you're thinking about adopting a pet, but are hesitant, we encourage you to keep reading as we #DismissTheMyth below!

During the last few weeks, LifeLine has been providing hurricane relief to people and their pets. And just this week, while we were in the thick of Hurricane Irma, we evacuated over 300 animals from our Fulton County Animal Services location.

Hurricane Irma is on its way to Florida and potentially parts of the southeast, including Atlanta. Many Florida evacuees have already made their way to Atlanta, but are finding that there are no pet-friendly hotels left. In an effort to prepare for Hurricane Irma and assist those who have evacuated with their pets, LifeLine's Fulton County Animal Services, along with the Red Cross, will be providing an off-site shelter in Atlanta for pets of evacuees. Additionally, we are currently evacuating all animals from our Fulton County Animal Services shelter, in preparation for Hurricane Irma. Here's how you can help:

The Animal Farm Foundation flew down to Atlanta today to visit our Fulton County Animal Services location! Animal Farm Foundation "dedicates their resources to securing equal treatment and opportunity for "pit bull" dogs. Whether the dog is called a "pit bull" because of a documented pedigree, or merely on the basis of physical appearance, recognizing that these dogs are individuals for whom we are responsible is an integral step toward a compassionate future for all dogs."Blog Post 4

Often times, people assume that if a dog or cat has been with us for a long period of time, there must be something wrong with him/her. When, in actuality, that couldn't be farther from the truth. Any animal that can withstand the shelter environment for an extensive length of time has a great amount of resilience. And often times, their length of stay is a testament to their solid temperament. We encourage you to give our longtimers a chance, whether it's just a Dog for the Day adventure, temporary foster or loving forever home!

Our volunteers spend over 300 hours per week with our shelter pets! From bottle feeding kittens to walking dogs, they fall in love with our cats and dogs just as much as we do. We think our pets are pretty awesome, but don't take our word for it! Here are some of our volunteer favorites!
