Very soon we will be opening our DeKalb Kitten Sittin' Room where our volunteers can help incoming bottle babies. Find out how you can help!
A Newborn Nursery for Tiny Felines
We have an exciting project underway at LifeLine’s DeKalb County Animal Services shelter. A room there is currently being prepped, painted and outfitted to become a neonatal nursery where we can care for some of LifeLine’s tiniest shelter residents–newborn kittens!
Tiny and fragile, newborn kittens are one of the highest risk groups of animals entering the shelter. They are susceptible to infectious diseases and require around-the-clock nursing to survive. Our new nursery will provide these babies with the special care they need to eventually become someone’s beloved pet.
The nursery, which is slated to open in time for kitten season on April 1st, will be staffed by employees and volunteers who will bottle feed and care for the babies during two-to-three hour shifts throughout the day and night. Volunteers will also be welcome to drop in to help feed the babies.
Like any new nursery, ours will need to be stocked full of baby supplies before the kittens arrive, so we’re holding a virtual online baby shower, and you’re invited! If you’d like to purchase a gift for the new nursery, please visit our registry and select from the kitten supplies listed on the first page.
Note: While we are doing our best to take care of every kitten that comes through our doors, we want to avoid taking healthy litters away from their mothers. Catching a mother afterwords can very difficult, so if you find healthy looking kittens on their own, they very likely are being well cared for.
