Elle and Chester

We have many different volunteer opportunities, from bottle-feeding kittens to washing dogs. However, our most popular program has been our Dog for the Day program! With our Dog for the Day program, volunteers can "check-out" a dog for the day and take them all over Atlanta! It's a great opportunity for our pups to gain exposure, while getting a quick reprieve from the shelter. And it's a fun day for our volunteers to socialize while giving back to Atlanta's homeless animals. Though we have many amazing volunteers, one volunteer has become our Dog for the Day guru and that's Elle Prescott! Elle takes her shelter favorite all over the city - from the Atlanta BeltLine to Bruster's to Glenwood Park. And because Elle has mastered the art of taking a "Dog for the Day", we thought we'd let her tell you all about her current shelter favorite.

Elle's current favorite at our Fulton County Animal Services location is Chester, an adorable pup with a personality to match his smile. Here's what Elle had to say about their adventures so far:

I always check the website a few times a week to try and decide which dog I want to take out for Dog for the Day each weekend. Chester was an automatic "yes" because he reminded me of a manatee in his intake picture, and manatees are my favorite animal. He has become the only dog I have taken out for weeks now, because I have fallen in love with his sweet, squishy face.

Chester is probably one of the most perfect dogs I have ever met. He walks extremely well on the leash, and will only pause and observe other dogs who walk by, never pulls, jumps, or barks. He is also the most polite dinner companion, as he will just lay at your feet while you enjoy your dinner out at a restaurant. Even after you give him a taste of your meal, he will not bug you for more!

I have taken him as many places as possible over the past couple of months. We have gone to Home Depot, where he laid at my feet, and under the tables of plants in the garden center. We picked out flowers at Pikes, and he was warned many times not to "water" any of the flowers at the store. We even went to Scott's Antique Market, where he made many friends while sporting his bunny ears. Basically, being out with Chester has to be what it is like to take Chris Evans, because he gets so much attention every where you take him.

Chester would make an AMAZING therapy dog, or just continue being a great hammock buddy!
